Cholera vaccine: Why Get Vaccinated? Cholera is a severe bacterial infection caused by Vibrio cholerae, leading to profuse watery diarrhoea, dehydration, and potentially fatal complications. It spreads through contaminated food and water, particularly in areas with poor sanitation. Who Should Get Vaccinated? • Travelers visiting regions where cholera is common, such as parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. • People at higher risk, including: • Aid workers in humanitarian crisis zones. • Individuals in cholera outbreak areas. • Those with limited access to clean water and sanitation. Vaccine Options • Oral vaccines (recommended by WHO): o Dukoral® – Two doses given 1–6 weeks apart (three doses for children aged 2–5). o Euvichol-Plus® / Shanchol™ – Two doses given at least two weeks apart. How It’s Given • Oral vaccine—taken by mouth, usually with water. • Timing—should be completed at least 10 days before travel. Side Effects • Usually mild, including nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhoea. Additional Precautions • Drink safe water—use bottled or purified water. • Practice good hygiene—wash hands frequently. • Avoid contaminated food—stick to well-cooked meals.
