Hep A vaccine: Why Get Vaccinated? Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. It spreads through contaminated food, water, or close contact with an infected person. While most cases are mild, the disease can cause severe liver inflammation and prolonged illness. Who Should Get Vaccinated? • Travelers visiting regions where hepatitis A is common. • High-risk regions: Parts of Africa and Asia. • Intermediate-risk regions: Areas in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, and some parts of Asia. Vaccine Schedule • Standard Course: Two doses given six months apart. • Combined Hepatitis A & B Vaccine: Three doses over six months. • Booster Doses: Gives protection for 25 years How It’s Given • Administered as an injection in the upper arm. Side Effects • Usually mild, including soreness at the injection site, fatigue, headache, or nausea. Additional Precautions • Practice good hygiene, especially handwashing. • Avoid contaminated food and water when traveling. • Seek medical attention if exposed to hepatitis A.
