Service Description
Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine: Why Get Vaccinated? Japanese encephalitis is a serious viral infection spread by mosquitoes. It can cause brain inflammation (encephalitis), seizures, paralysis, and even death. While rare for travelers, the risk is higher in rural Asia. Who Should Get Vaccinated? • Travellers visiting regions where JE is common, especially rural areas with rice fields or pig farms. • High-risk areas include parts of India, China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and Southeast Asia (such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam). • If you're traveling to these regions and plan to stay for more than a month, or if you'll be spending time in rural or outdoor environments, vaccination is advised. Vaccine Schedule • Standard Course: Two doses— o First dose: Given at least four weeks before travel. o Second dose: Administered 28 days after the first. This can be accelerated to 7 days if needed • Booster Dose: Recommended after 12–24 months for 10 years protection. How It’s Given • Administered as an injection in the upper arm. Side Effects • Usually mild, including soreness at the injection site, fever, headache, or fatigue. Additional Precautions • Use mosquito repellent and wear protective clothing. • Sleep under mosquito nets, especially in high-risk areas. • Seek medical attention if you develop symptoms after traveling to a JE-prone region.
