polio, tetanus, and diphtheria (Td/IPV) vaccine: Why Get Vaccinated? The Td/IPV vaccine protects against three serious diseases: • Polio – A viral infection that can cause paralysis and, in severe cases, death. • Tetanus – A bacterial infection that affects the nervous system, leading to muscle spasms and breathing difficulties. • Diphtheria – A bacterial infection that can cause breathing problems, heart damage, and nerve issues. Who Should Get Vaccinated? • Adults at higher risk, including: • Travellers visiting areas where medical help may be difficult to access. • Polio – Endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, with occasional outbreaks in parts of Africa. • Tetanus – Higher risk in low-income countries with poor maternal and neonatal healthcare, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. • Diphtheria – Outbreaks have been reported in India, Indonesia, Venezuela, and Yemen, where vaccination rates are lower. • People with deep or dirty wounds that could lead to tetanus. • Workers in high-risk environments, such as laboratory staff. Vaccine Schedule • Standard Course: Five doses throughout childhood and adolescence. Boosters: May be needed for travel or injuries. Booster protection lasts 10 years How It’s Given • Administered as an injection in the upper arm. Side Effects • Usually mild, including redness, swelling, or soreness at the injection site. • Possible fever, headache, or fatigue, lasting 1–2 days. Additional Precautions • Check your vaccination history before traveling. • Seek medical attention if you have a deep wound and are unsure of your tetanus protection.
