Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccine: Why Get Vaccinated? Tick-borne encephalitis is a viral infection that affects the central nervous system. It is spread through bites from infected ticks and can cause serious complications, including meningitis and encephalitis. In severe cases, it may lead to long-term neurological damage or even death. Who Should Get Vaccinated? • Travelers visiting regions where TBE is common, such as parts of Europe, Russia, and East Asia. • People at higher risk, including: • Those spending time in forested or rural areas. • Individuals engaging in outdoor activities like hiking or camping. • People working in tick-prone environments. Vaccine Schedule • Standard Course: Three doses— o First dose: Given at least two months before travel. o Second dose: Administered 1–3 months after the first. o Third dose: Given 5–12 months after the second. • Accelerated Course: If traveling on short notice, the first two doses may be given 14 days apart. • Booster Doses: Recommended every three years for continued protection. How It’s Given • Administered as an injection in the upper arm. Side Effects • Usually mild, including tiredness, nausea, headache, or soreness at the injection site. Additional Precautions • Avoid tick bites by wearing long sleeves and trousers. • Use insect repellent containing DEET. • Check for ticks after spending time outdoors. • Seek medical attention if bitten by a tick in a high-risk area.
